Zanskar, a former kingdom, now a part of the union territory of Ladakh has for long remained the last “Shangri la”. In earlier times Zanskar used to be cut off for more than six months of the year due to heavy snowfall in winter and the frozen Zanskar river was the only means of connecting the villages of Zanskar to the capital Leh. This route later became famous as the Chadar trek.
However, there is a new road now along the Zanskar river through Chilling connecting Leh to the capital of Zanskar, Padum in 150 km or 6 hours. Most of this road is black top other than 30 km which is still a dirt track. This trip into Zanskar combines day walks, with monastery visits and forts. The trip has the best of Zanskar with sculpted rock formations, medieval villages, Buddhist gompas and snow-peaks. Join us to see the last “Shangri-la’ before it gets inundated with tourists.
