 South Col is a saddle at 26,000 feet between the peaks of Everest and Lhotse. It was named by the the British Everest expedition of 1921. The windswept plain, the size of a football field,  is used by current Everest expeditions as the location of their high camp for the final summit bid. Here is a photograph of Hillary and Tenzing on the South Col before their bid for the summit which they climbed on May 29th 1953.
